Master Bathroom

I decided to put a soffit in the master bathroom above the sink and toilet. I am hoping that it will quiet the fan a bit, lower the reflective surface above the counter and allow me to tie the whole wall together with wood trim along the ceiling line to match the cabinets under the sink.

I tiled behind the toilet before I set the bowl so that it would be easier. The grey stuff on the upper wall is backerboard for the tile. The hole on the right hand side of the plumbing is for a pull-out cupboard (similar to the one in the dining room) which extends into wasted space in the corner of the kitchen
cupboards. This will be a good place to put all the cleaning stuff you need in a bathroom without giving up valuable cabinet space.

The countertop extends wall to wall and the design is what I call "Art Deco meets Prairie." I like the lines of Deco but I am not in love with the contrasting colors, especially in a bathroom. I am using softer, warmer colors with a mixture of browns.

I am fascinated by mosaics and hope to do some in the future so I thought this would be a good chance to try out some ideas. The nylon mesh is the same stuff you use to cover your vents on your house foundation. I put the drawing on a board, covered it with a layer of waxed paper and the mesh. I then cut the tiles to size and, using a fingertip blob of mastic, fastened them to the mesh. As you can see it worked out pretty good!

All grouted and ready for the wood trim and cabinets! The curved cutout area above the sink will be a round mirror and the cabinet below the sink will match the curve of the counter. I still need to hook up the drain and water and the bathroom will at least be usable while I finish all the woodworking...
